Brahms (1833-1897)
Description:
The ethereal harmonies of Brahms sung by Germany's best choirThe Berlin Radio Choir, Germany's most successful mixed choir. Numerous record awards ─ among them three Grammy Awards and many Classical Echo Awards. The choir has also proven its international quality in many ways as an indispensable choir for performing with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. The latest recording by this renowned chorus under the direction of its current principal conductor, Hayes Lehners, is a collection of Brahms' choral works. Brahms became conductor of the Zink Academy in Vienna in 1863, and while premiering several Bach cantatas and his own "German Requiem," he also took advantage of the choral material and composed some wonderful choral works. The severe yet beautiful "Ode to Fate," based on a poem by Helderlin, is not performed in an orchestral version, but in a rare two-piano version. The "Song of Remembrance," written in memory of the painter Feuerbach, is full of sadness, but it is also beautiful music filled with tenderness and a ray of hope. All of the works recorded here are Brahms' finest choral works, and the Berlin Radio Choir sings them wonderfully, as Brahms intended.
