Corigliano (1938-)
Description:
This CD contains all of the solo piano works and piano concertos written by John Corigliano, the American composer who wrote the music for the opera "The Ghost of Versailles" and the movie "Red Violin", etc. The "Piano Concerto", composed in 1968, is in four movements, basically atonal. The "Fantasy on Ostinato," written for the "7th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition" in 1986, is a test of the performer's minimalist qualities. It is a test of a performer's minimalist qualities. It is characterized by a relentless repetition of notes. The Prelude, written for Corigliano's friend Paul Sekhri, a biotechnologist and amateur pianist, includes quotations from Rachmaninoff's works. Other pieces include the technical "Fantastic Exercises," which includes exercises for the left hand, and "Winging It," based on his own improvisations. Performing is English pianist Philip Edward Fischer, whose repertoire ranges from Handel to Russian music. Naxos Japan
