Ao Fu Hou is a distinctive Phoenix Dancong variety originating from an old mother tree that grew behind a natural hollow in the mountain slope. The original name “凹堀后 (Ao Ku Hou)” referred simply to its location — a tea tree growing behind a rock recess. Over time, through Chaozhou dialect sound shifts, it evolved into the more auspicious name Ao Fu Hou (“Hollow Fortune”), which later became the accepted varietal name.

This tea belongs to the Huang Zhi Xiang (yellow gardenia aroma) category but carries its own recognizable character. Grown at 800–1000 meters in the Phoenix Mountain area of Chaozhou, it offers a clear “mountain yun” and a layered aromatic profile. Hand-picked at one bud with three leaves, the tea is processed through the classic Dancong method: sun-withering, indoor resting, repeated shaking during the zuoqing stage, fixation, rolling, and drying. These steps shape its floral intensity, clean sweetness, and long, smooth finish.

The liquor is bright golden and clear. The aroma features high gardenia notes supported by sweet, candy-like tones, light dairy hints, and a subtle woody accent often found in high-altitude, older bushes. The taste is sweet, cool on the palate, smooth, and persistent, with fast and strong returning sweetness. Ao Fu Hou stands out among Dancong teas for its balance of floral clarity, sweetness, and structured mouthfeel.

Dry leaf is tightly twisted, fine, and glossy dark brown. The tea is expressive, stable across multiple infusions, and appreciated for its elegant fragrance and deep, comforting “mountain character.”
