Description:
An album of Nick Cave covers by musicians Nell Smith and The Flaming Lips, who are only 14 years old. Where the Viaduct Looms is an album of nine Nick Cave covers, with vocals/instrumentation by 14-year-old Nell Smith and instrumentation/production by The Flaming Lips. Mastering was done by Dave Fridmann of Tarbox Road Studios. This touching and heartwarming story begins when Smith, originally from Leeds, England, immigrated to Canada and met Wayne Coyne for the first time at the age of 12 at The Flaming Lips' headlining show at Calgary's Sled Island Festival in 2018 with his family Starting from the beginning, Smith had already attended several of The Flaming Lips' shows and was a regular at the front of the stage, wearing a parrot costume and screaming out the band's songs.Coyne soon began to notice the kid in the parrot suit, and when he sang a David Bowie cover directly to her at a show in Calgary, Smith sang every word back to him.As Smith learned to play guitar, Coyne began to get in touch with Smith and her father Jude. They stayed in touch, a musical bond was formed, and when Smith began writing her own songs, their creative relationship was created. Recording was originally scheduled for Oklahoma, but was cancelled due to Corona. Instead, Coyne suggested that Smith record a Nick Cave song, send it to him, and have the band play it. Coyne chose Nick Cave because "Smith doesn't know Nick Cave, so he doesn't have any preconceived notions about how to sing."
