Description:

Masterpiece reissue! The first stereo recording of Starker's "Kodály: Sonata Solo" (complete recording of the second movement) The recording process began with a pair of Neumann M-49 and M-269 microphones, and the decision of which one to use. The recording was made, playback was done, the microphone position was moved, and then recorded again. With the addition of the maestro, we pursued the most appropriate sound for this work, but at any rate, Peter Bartok's "sound" was still in my ears, and it was extremely difficult to overcome it. [The master musician János Starker passed away in April 2013. We are reissuing his masterpieces released by JVC in the 1970s. Starker's rise to the star began with Corday's Sonata for Unaccompanied Cello, which was released by JVC in the 1970s. This is the first stereo recording he made of the piece, and the second movement, which he had previously cut out and played in part, is now included in its entirety. The coupling is the "Variations on a Theme of Paganini" arranged by Bottermund-Starker. This disc includes a previously unreleased take of the same piece, which was not included on the LP, as a bonus track. <János Starker (cello) was born in Budapest in July 1924. Studied at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest under Adolf Schiffer. In 1945, he became principal cellist of the Budapest State Opera Orchestra and the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra. The following year he moved to France, where in 1948 he won the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of the unaccompanied cello sonatas of Kodály. That same year, he was invited by conductor Antal Dorati to become principal cellist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The following year, in 1949, he was invited by conductor Fritz Reiner to become principal cellist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra; in 1953, he moved with Reiner to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where he remained as principal cellist until 1958; in 1954, he became a U.S. citizen and in 1958 was appointed professor at Indiana University. He was an outstanding soloist and educator, and was active in many parts of the world. He died at his home in Indiana in April 2013 at the age of 88. Camerata Tokyo
