After winning a Memorial Cup with the Reginu Pats in 1974, Clarke made the jump to the NHL, joining the New York Islanders. By 1977 his impact was recognized and the was named the team captain. The same year he would tie a NHL record, scoring 3 consecutive playoff game-winning goals. Gillies was named a 1st Team All-Star in both 1973 and 1979 before capturing 4 consecutive Stanley Cups from 1980-83. The 6-time, 30 goal scorer finished playing his career with 2 seasons as a Buffalo Sabre.
