England was shaken by the "Puritan Revolution" in the 17th century. People were repeatedly divided into parliamentary and royalist factions. Elvira, who was in love with Arturo, a knight of the royalist faction but a member of the parliamentary faction (puritan), overrode her father's proposal of an engagement to Riccardo, a member of the parliamentary faction, to marry Arturo. However, Arturo, who is burning with a sense of duty, learns that the queen of the time is in danger, and flees to save her life. When Elvira learns that Arturo has "run away with another woman," she loses her mind... "The Puritan," the last work composed by Bellini, who passed away at the age of less than 34. Like Donizetti's "Lucia di Lammermoor," it is a romantic work that provides a long "mad scene," a showcase for the soprano singer. It is also a difficult opera to perform, requiring not only the tenor singers to hit the ultra-high notes of "high D" but also high vocal ability from each of the singers.
