Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart The Horn Concertos Mozart’s horn concertos are closely connected to Viennese horn virtuoso Joseph Leutgeb. Mozart was familiar with Leutgeb’s mastery of the natural horn and employed specific techniques bound to the instrument, such as stopped tones, to musical ends. The four concertos are buoyant and sprightly works that all climax in lively “hunting” finales. Contrary to popular opinion, Mozart did not write one of the concertos in four different colors of ink just as a prank, but as a color code which gave indication of dynamic and declamatory nuances. Hornist Bruno Schneider and the Orchestra da Camera di Padova e del Veneto under the direction of Bruno Giuranna provide exhilarating performances.
