LISTEN TO OUR SHORT AUDIO ABOUT BERGAMOT
Bergamot is a sweet and subtle, lesser-known citric essential oil that people simply love! Bergamot takes its name from an Italian city, Bergamo in Lombardy (although the Greeks say it comes from a Turkish word meaning “the lord’s pear.”) The Italians have used Bergamot in folk medicine for years, in particular for fevers and as an antiseptic. It also helps restore the spirit!
Bergamot has been long used in perfumes (and in Napolean's time, it was the trendiest to wear as a perfume.)
HISTORICAL ANECDOTES: An essence extracted from the aromatic skin of this sour fruit is used in Earl Grey and Lady Grey teas, and in the confectionery Turkish Delight. It is often found in marmalade in Europe (especially in Italy). It is said that Columbus brought bergamot from the Canary Islands to Italy. In Napoleonic times, it was trendy to use Bergamot as a cologne or perfume!
WARNING: Bergamot, like all citrus essential oils, is phototoxic. That is, don’t use it on your skin and then go into the sun (for instance, you used in an oil or cream on skin that will be exposed to the sun.)
HOW TO USE:
1) Like many essential oils, it’s lovely to simply breathe in. Inhale directly from the bottle; diffuse it; put some drops on a cotton ball, cloth or personal inhaler, and breathe in. It is uplifting and can help your mood.
2) Bergamot Blends Well with Others! Bergamot blends very well with florals (such as Neroli and Rose Geranium), and herbals (such as Clary Sage, Rosemary and Lavender), and very well with Black Pepper.
3) Urinary tract infection: Add Bergamot oil to your sitz bath or hip bath to help prevent the spread of bacterial infections from the urethra into the bladder. It has shown great effectiveness against the specific bacteria that causes these infections.
3) Respiratory issues? Coughing? Bergamot is an anti-spasmodic and can help calm coughs.
4) Compress. Use a cold compress with some drops of Bergamot (or blend Bergamot and Lavender) for relief – from a headache to a strained ankle, or a warm compress for sore muscles. Use 2-4 drops of Bergamot (and if you want to add 2 drops Lavender) in a bowl of water, soak the compress in it, then wring it out and place on the affected area. Leave for at least an hour, or freshen as needed.
5) Lovely Recipe for an Anti-Depressant: Blend Bergamot with Lavender and Ylang Ylang.
6) Urinary Tract Infection? Studies show it can help. Do a sitz bath with Bergmot, or blend in an oil or cream and massage on your lower abdomen often.
7) Cleanse Fruits and Vegetables: If you are worried about pesticides on your fresh fruit and veggies, add 2-4 of Bergamot to have a gallon of water and cleanse! Then rinse.
