A native of Cuba, the Nandopsis tetracanthus or Cuban Cichlid makes for a majestic center display in a large aquarium. Known for its high contrast black and white marble pattern, which morphs in to an iridescent purple and black coloration when mature, this cichlid can inhabit brackish water in the wild.
Full of personality, and quite aggressive, tank mates can be a challenge. Some hobbyists have been successful keeping them with Plecos, Green Terrors, and Red Devils of a similar size, but the only risk free tank mate is a female Cuban Cichlid. The best way to get a pair is to let a group of young fish grow up together in a tank and allow pairs to form naturally. Cubans can grow up to 10 inches in length and live up to 15 years.
