The 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment was reactivated in Germany on October 4, 2023, at Katterbach Kaserne in Ansbach. This unit is an active duty short-range air defense unit with capabilities similar to the 5th Battalion, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment in Ansbach, Germany. The activation of the 1st Battalion, 57th Air Defense Artillery Regiment is part of the U.S. Army's expansion of air defense capacity in Europe, particularly in response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The unit's mission is to provide additional surface-based air defense to the European theater, directly supporting ground force commanders with short-range air defense systems. The activation follows the 52D Air Defense Artillery Brigade, which was activated last October to serve as a Brigade Headquarters under the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command. The addition of the new 1-57 short-range air defense regiment significantly strengthens the United States' contribution to ground-based air defense within the European Command (EUCOM) region.
