Between the 1950s and 1970s Stoke used a shield from the Stoke-on-Trent coat-of-arms but in 1977 a simpler club crest was designed which incorporated a Stafford knot and a pottery kiln to represent local influences. It was at this juncture that the red and white stripes were also added.
