I know from the dealer I purchased this from--who shares my love of antique naive drawings and watercolors and has many I covet--that it was done by a child in Burdett, NY, c. 1860s. I paid nearly as much for it as I am asking, but just couldn't resist this wonderfully specific and wonderfully wonky structure, with its green door, two smoking chimneys and all these many windows glowing yellow. The way the leaves on those trees were rendered under the watercolor is really excellent too. And the methodically drawn double crosses to either side, I presume detailing an iron fence, but which also have the effect of suggesting a cemetery. This does look a bit like a church or meeting house, I'm not entirely sure but might guess easily identified with a stroll around Burdett (Schuyler County; current population under 400) if still standing! And with another portrait of a house on reverse of a different style, flat orange roof and draped windows.
5" x 5 3/4" framed as found, floating between two panes of glass, roughly period frame. Very good condition, the drawing/color on reverse not quite as bold as the one on front.
