I have written this book with the history scholar in mind but rather the uninitiated, not with the specialist in art but rather the novice, for I am rather the latter than the first myself--the main purpose being to show the Filipino people the variety of images (and the stories they tell) that the world produced about their own country, pictures that have remained largely unknown within the Philippines, yet so artistic and beautiful in execution and thought, they astonish to this very day.

All images featured, without exception, are prints either still with our collection in the Gallery of Prints or held by us in the past and now in private hands. They typify printed art during this period, and represent a cross-section of an extensive, but by no means exhaustive, collection.
