Hand-shorn from our small flock of home-bred, rare-breed Shropshire sheep and local Jacob sheep, this raw, untreated sheeps’ wool mulch is a beautifully natural way to protect and nourish your garden. Each fleece is taken directly from our own farm and packed with no processing or washing — just 100% natural, chemical-free wool, straight from sheep to box.
Wool mulch is a fantastic multi-purpose material for gardeners looking for a sustainable, plastic-free option. It forms a soft, breathable layer that:
Because the fleece is completely raw, you may notice small traces of hay, straw, natural earth, or organic matter — a sign of its authentic, farm-fresh origin.
Each order contains approximately 1.2 kg of fleece. Will be sent in a box or a recyclable mailing bag depending on how many ordered.
Perfect for allotments, raised beds, vegetable patches, cut-flower beds, pots, and containers. Safe and natural nesting material for birds.
How to use as a garden mulch:
1. Remove large weeds or debris from the soil surface. Water the soil well before adding the wool — this helps lock moisture underneath the mulch.
2. Tear or pull apart the fleece. The wool arrives in natural, sheared sheets. Simply pull it apart into loose, fluffy sections. Break it up enough so air and water can move through it easily.
3. Apply a generous layer. Spread the wool around the base of plants, seedlings or across bare soil. Aim for a layer of 3–5 cm (1–2 inches) for best moisture retention and slug deterrence.
4. Keep the wool away from direct stem contact. Leave a small gap around the stem or crown of plants to prevent dampness directly against stems.
5. Water lightly after applying. A quick water helps settle the fibres into place and improves soil contact.
6. Top up as needed. Wool slowly biodegrades, feeding the soil as it breaks down. You can top up the mulch every 6–12 weeks, depending on weather and plant density.
7. End-of-season care. At the end of the season, simply mix any remaining wool into the soil. It continues to break down, adding natural organic matter and slow-release nitrogen.
