HOW SHOULD I DRESS WHEN VISITING THE MIDDLE EAST?

Loose fitting clothing is best. Shoulders should be covered, skirts and dresses should dover the knee but longer is best. Avoid wearing tight fitting, revealing and sheer clothing. Shawls, cardigans and scarves are great to have on hand. Remember, people dress much more conservative in this part of the world.

 

HOW MANY SEASONS DO ISRAEL AND JORDAN HAVE?

It is important to note that there are only two distinct seasons. A cool, rainy Winter (October - April) and a dry, hot summer (May - September).

HOW SHOULD I DRESS FOR THE WINTER TIME SEASON?

Be sure to pack a waterproof jacket, cardigan, long pants, boots, sturdy sneakers, long sleeves, a scarf and warm socks.

HOW SHOULD I DRESS FOR THE SUMMER TIME SEASON?

Stick to lightweight and breathable fabrics. Bring along loose fitting tops, flowy dresses, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen. Remember, this part of the world dresses more modestly.

You should cover your knees and shoulders when visiting places like The Western Wall, churches of the city, and other sacred locations.

3. Via Dolorosa 

The Via Dolorosa is a processional route in the Old City of Jerusalem. It represents the path that Jesus would have taken, forced by the Roman soldiers, on the way to his crucifixion.

4. Getsemani 

Gethsemane is a garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem where, according to the four Gospels of the New Testament, Jesus Christ underwent the agony in the garden and was arrested before his crucifixion. It is a place of great resonance in Christianity.

5. Kidron Valley 

Kidron Valley is the modern name of the valley originating slightly northeast of the Old City of Jerusalem, which then separates the Temple Mount from the Mount of Olives, and ending at the Dead Sea.

6. Old Town Jerusalem 

Surrounded by ancient walls, the Old City is home to holy sites such as the Western Wall, Dome of the Rock Islamic shrine, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, which dates to the 4th century. Shops and markets selling prayer shawls, rosaries, and ceramics fill busy alleys, while food stalls serve falafel, pita, and fresh-squeezed juice. In a medieval citadel, the Tower of David museum chronicles the city’s history.

7. Zion Gate 

Zion Gate, also known in Arabic as Bab Harat al-Yahud or Bab an-Nabi Dawud, is one of the seven historic Gates of the Old City of Jerusalem

8. Western Wall 

The Western Wall, known in the West as the Wailing Wall, and in Islam as the Buraq Wall, is a portion of ancient limestone wall in the Old City of Jerusalem that forms part of the larger retaining wall of the hill known to Jews and Christians as the Temple Mount.

9. Christian Quarter 

The ancient Christian Quarter centers on the 4th-century Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where millions of pilgrims visit holy sites such as the traditional site of Jesus Christ's crucifixion and his tomb. Historic Damascus Gate is within leafy Mish'ol HaPninim Garden, not far from the famous Via Dolorosa processional route. Antique shops, cafes and restaurants cluster around the storied Muristan market complex.

10. Calvary Hill 

Calvary or Golgotha was a site immediately outside Jerusalem's walls where, according to Christianity's four canonical gospels, Jesus was crucified. Since at least the early medieval period, it has been a destination for pilgrimage

11. The Holy Sepulcher 

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre, or Church of the Resurrection, is a church in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. It is considered to be the holiest site for Christians in the world, as it has been the most important pilgrimage site for Christianity since the 4th century.

12. Mount Zion 

Mount Zion is a hill in Jerusalem, located just outside the walls of the Old City. The term Mount Zion has been used in the Hebrew Bible first for the City of David and later for the Temple Mount, but its meaning has shifted and it is now used as the name of ancient Jerusalem's Western Hill.

Jericho is a Palestinian city in the West Bank. It is located in the Jordan Valley, with the Jordan River to the east and Jerusalem to the west.

4. Transfer to the Judaean Desert 

The Judaean Desert is a desert in Israel and the West Bank that lies east of Jerusalem and the Judean hills and west of the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea.

5. The Good Samaritan Inn 

This inn is a museum, national park and ancient archeological site.

6. Qasr El Yahud 

Qasr al-Yahud, also known as Al-Maghtas, is the western section of the traditional site of the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist on the Jordan River.

7. Masada National Park 

Masada is an ancient fortress in southern Israel’s Judean Desert. It's on a massive plateau overlooking the Dead Sea. A cable car and a long, winding path climb up to the fortifications, built around 30 B.C. Among the ruins are King Herod's Palace, which sprawls over 3 rock terraces, and a Roman-style bathhouse with mosaic floors. The Masada Museum has archaeological exhibits and recreations of historical scenes.

8. Dead Sea 

The Dead Sea, also known by other names, is a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and the West Bank and Israel to the west. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley, and its main tributary is the Jordan River.

Bethlehem is a Palestinian town south of Jerusalem in the West Bank. The biblical birthplace of Jesus, it’s a major Christian pilgrimage destination. The birth is marked by an inlaid silver star in a grotto under the 6th-century Church of the Nativity, which shares Manger Square with the 15th-century Church of St. Catherine and the 1860 Mosque of Omar.

3. Visit Tabgha 

Tabgha is an area situated on the north-western shore of the Sea of Galilee in Israel and a depopulated Palestinian village. It is traditionally accepted as the place of the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes and the fourth resurrection appearance of Jesus after his Crucifixion.

4. Capernaum 

Capernaum was a fishing village established during the time of the Hasmoneans, located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. It had a population of about 1,500. Archaeological excavations have revealed two ancient synagogues built one over the other.

The Sea of Galilee, also called Lake Tiberias or Kinneret, is a freshwater lake in Israel. It is the lowest freshwater lake on Earth and the second-lowest lake in the world, at levels between 215 metres and 209 metres below sea level. It is approximately 53 km in circumference, about 21 km long, and 13 km wide.

6. Yardenit 

Yardenit, also known as the Yardenit Baptismal Site, is a baptism site located along the Jordan River in the Galilee region of northern Israel, which is frequented by Christian pilgrims.

7. Qsar al Yahud

2. Head to Caesarea 

Caesarea is a town on Israel's Mediterranean coast. It’s known for Caesarea National Park, which includes a large Roman amphitheater and the historic port. On the site is an archaeological park with pillars and sculptures, and the remains of a hippodrome, with frescoes and stone seating. The ruins of the seafront Promontory Palace include the remains of a mosaic floor.

3. Head to Haifa 

Haifa is a northern Israeli port city built in tiers extending from the Mediterranean up the north slope of Mount Carmel. The city’s most iconic sites are the immaculately landscaped terraces of the Bahá'í Gardens and, at their heart, the gold-domed Shrine of the Báb. At the foot of the gardens lies the German Colony, with shops, galleries and restaurants in 19th-century buildings.

4. Visit Akko 

Acre (Akko) is a port city in northwest Israel, on the Mediterranean coast. It’s known for its well-preserved old city walls. In a tunnel in the walls is the Treasures in the Walls Ethnographic Museum, depicting daily life from the Ottoman times to the 20th century. The mosaic-covered Or Torah (Tunisian) Synagogue has 7 torah arks. The 18th-century Al-Jazzar Mosque has marble pillars and underground pools

5. Visit Mezquitas 

A mosque or masjid is a place of prayer for Muslims. Mosques are usually covered buildings, but can be any place where prayers are performed, including outdoor courtyards. The first mosques were simple places of prayer for Muslims, and may have been open spaces rather than buildings.
