Virgo
Description:
The band was formed in Germany in 1974 by a multinational group of members including Henryk Darlowski, keyboardist from Poland, Lothar Scharf (drs), who was a member of the German experimental rock band DZYAN for a while, and Bobby Stern (sax), a saxophonist from America. The band released four albums on Vertigo and Bellaphon's Bacillus label in the 70's. VIRGO's 1978 album was remastered and reissued on CD for the first time in 2011 on Poland's Chickadisc label (GAD Records). The band features new members Udo Kistner (b) from Germany and Juraj Galan (g) from the Czech Republic, and was produced by Henryk Darlowski himself. The album is in the vein of North American crossover/fusion sounds of the same era, such as WEATHER REPORT and RETURN TO FOREVER, but also has the delicate expression and fresh lyricism of a European product, as evidenced by the ethereal flute/violin interplay in counterpoint at the beginning of the album. The album features a jazz rock and fusion sound characterized by finely tuned arrangements that also include the delicate expression and fresh lyricism that only a European band can produce. The band's sound is characterized by a jazz rock/fusion sound that is characterized by the subtlety of expression, fresh lyricism, and detailed arrangements that are typical of European jazz rock. Although there are some easy-listening style parts, the band's performance is as good as any other well-known band, with a good balance of technical playing and aggressive solos by Mogg with his spacy tone. Their work has never been reissued, and this CD release is a hidden jazz-rock masterpiece that deserves to be reevaluated! The masters were remastered from the original master tapes.
